It’ s few weeks nows since the war between Ukraine and Russia broke out. And as the conflict between the two side rages, many Nigerians have continued fleeing the danger zone into neighbouring countries.
Paul Adesoye is a pastor who embarked on a mission to take care of Nigerian refugees in Slovakia and he has about five different locations for young people. Since the Russian- Ukraine war broke out, the pastor have been providing the daily needs of the Nigerian refugees who came to his church for assistance, but now the burden is now overwhelming him due to the increase in number of the refugees.
Speaking with the press, the pastor narrated the challenges he’ s facing currently, while adding that he need assistance from the Nigerian government because the burden is now becoming too much for his to bear.
” The number of Nigeria refugees under my care is like about 200 people. I’ m appealing to the Nigerian government to come to the aid of these one here because the church has been spending a lot of money to keep these people alive by providing food, clothes, and accommodation. So, it will be wonderful if we receive help from the Nigerian government. ”
” As a church, we have invested a lot of money in sustaining this people. They eat three times daily and we also provide clothes for them as most of them don’ t have anything to wear. ”
While the pastor was narrating his ordeal, some journalist asked him how he has been coping with the aid he’ s been receiving from his Slovakian neighbors or people around him, but surprisingly, the pastor retorted by saying no one has come to assist him.
” No, we have not been receiving any help. Since these Nigerian refugees arrived, their needs has been solely on our head. We sent out messages to some people to come and help us but, we haven’ t yet received any response or help which is now what is prompting us to cry out to Nigerian government. These stranded young people with me needs help, majority of them are students from Ukraine and we’ re running out of funds. ”
Journalist also went further to ask questions concerning the locations of all the students. They inquired if the students were in a shift centre or if they were part of his church.
Responding to this question above, the pastor explained that male are sleeping in the church auditorium, while the female were being lodged in a hostel and his church is responsible for everything. He also added that some of the refugees are willing to return to Nigeria but they don’ t have any money to initiate the process.
” Some of them want to go back to Nigeria, but, they don’ t have any money with them. The Ukrainian money they brought in here is useless as paper here. No bank is collecting it here. “
